Cycling is literally ingrained in our blood. Not surprising, when you know how much there is to see along the Flemish cycling paths. It is, of course, one of the benefits of our flat terrain - ask anyone who pedals along ’t Zeetje, through the never-ending flats and plains and along our seemingly endless well-trodden paths.

The nine iconic cycle paths that we have created, will take you along the very best of what Flanders has to offer: beautiful landscapes as far as the eye can see, chance meetings in pubs and (cycle) inns along the way, and mouth-watering gastronomy around every corner. We have it all! All the iconic cycle routes run through crossroads and connect the most beautiful parts of our region pegged around a specific theme. The Art City Route, for example, runs right across Flanders and provides a view that takes in natural landscapes and art, while the Hilly Route allows the cyclist to challenge the strength of their calf muscles and their endurance for local beers. Each route is easily navigable and provides beautiful vistas over timeless sights and landmarks.

What’s more, the distances between all these sights is measured in bike minutes, not hours. If that doesn’t make us a cycling country par excellence, what would? The cycling routes can all be combined in any way chosen, whether its for a day out, a weekend break or even a five-day trip. And it’s worth knowing that any of the starting points can be reached easily by car or train. For those that want to venture further afield, there are plenty of possibilities to extend your trip to Wallonia in southern Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany.

But perhaps the biggest attraction to our cycling routes is the sheer variety of the interesting options available. Ahead of each plain and valley you might encounter a ridge, sometimes classed as a ‘wall’. So, what’s your challenge? It’s up to you what you want to do: sweat, chill out or both!

Coastal route

Coastal route

De Panne - Knokke-Heist (85 km)

Are you looking for the perfect combination of nature, maritime history and culture? And can you stand up to a gust of wind? Do you long for the salty taste of the sea? The coastal route will satisfy your hunger for new horizons. Plan a two-day break for this one and decide on the direction you take when you know where the wind is blowing from. Ahoy there!

Meuse Route

Meuse Route

Riemst - Kinrooi (63 km)

Have you a few days to spare? Because if you want to discover the Meuse from source to estuary, you’ll be setting out on a tour of Europe. A 1000 km cycling route meanders from Langres in France to Hook of Holland.

14-18 Western Front Route

14-18 Western Front Route

Nieuwpoort - Mesen (100 km)

The Western Front Way takes you through the devastated and later restored landscape along the front line of the Great War. You zigzag on either side of the front line, where you come to understand how strategic that landscape was in wartime. And you see the action unfolding via bunkers and dug-outs, trenches, bomb craters and underground tunnels. At the many impressive military cemeteries, you taste again the silence.

Kempen Route

Kempen Route

Maasmechelen - Antwerpen (203 km)

A change is as good as a rest, so they say. And we certainly have a lot of changes in store for you. The Kempen Route alternates forest and heathland and industrial heritage - hello, mine sites of Genk! — and all this while following an old coal railway.

Scheldt Route

Scheldt Route

Doornik - Antwerpen (181 km)

The hardest bit of the Scheldt Route is deciding where to stop and picnic. In the countryside on the wetlands in Avelgem? Along the picturesque canal at Spiere-Helkijn? Or perhaps on the Graslei, like a real citizen of Ghent?

Green Belt Route

Green Belt Route

Halle - Vilvoorde (126 km)

Are you partial to imposing castles, undulating pastures and breathtaking panoramas? Time to fix a date: you’re going to take on the green suburbs of our capital. Up and down the hills through the country of Bruegel, hops, grapes and chicory.

Art Cities Route

Art Cities Route

Oostende - Brussel (332 km)

Who says that the only way to enjoy a cycling trip is to head for the countryside? If you cycle the Art Cities Route, you will pass through Brussels, Leuven, Mechelen, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Ostend. Centuries-old heritage, connected by a network of canals, rivers and old railway tracks, and forming a patchwork quilt of forts, churches, and almost non-stop art. In other words: you cycle through centuries of Flemish history.

Hill Route

Hill Route

Poperinge - Voeren (459 km)

Our hills, that’s where our great Belgian cyclists are made - and broken. During the classic tours, such as the Wall of Geraardsbergen, but equally on the hills around Kortrijk and the constantly undulating landscape of the Limburg fruit orchards.
